Beartown is such a sweet hidden gem, and a unique collection of breathtaking landscapes and rock formations. The winding boardwalk reminds me of an MC Escher’s drawing piercing through a small section of the state park which spans over 100 acres in Greenbrier and Pocahontas counties.
Even on a warm summer day, the added natural shade of all of the trees and beautiful neck-breaking high rocks keep it cool and crisp as you stroll through. The boardwalk can take as little or as long as you like, but I like to plan on about an hour or so. There are platforms (not pictured) where you can stop and relax on a bench or just hang out and enjoy the views.
Pack a lunch and make an afternoon of it. There are picnic tables tucked away with plenty of shade for a comfortable snack and break.
